ROBOTIC FABRICATION WORKSHOP 2025 by PAR-Lab

The Robotic Fabrication with Tree Forks workshop is a 5-day intensive program that explores the intersection of natural material logic and advanced digital design tools. Taking place at the Department of Architecture, Universitas Indonesia from 21–25 July 2025, this workshop focuses on the sculptural and structural potential of irregular natural wood, particularly tree forks, as unique construction elements.

Through a combination of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on sessions, participants will gain practical experience in material scanning, digital modeling (Rhino, Grasshopper, Karamba), CNC toolpath planning, and robotic milling. The workshop culminates in the fabrication and assembly of a full-scale structure, showcasing the creative and structural possibilities of computational design with natural wood.

Led by Celso Urroz (Florida Atlantic University, USA) and Miktha Farid Alkadri (Universitas Indonesia), the program is designed for students, researchers, and professionals interested in expanding their skills in computational design, structural simulation, and robotic fabrication.

The fabrication of the tree fork structure demonstrates how irregular natural wood can be transformed into high-performance architectural components through robotic milling. By combining digital scanning, structural simulation, and computational toolpath design, participants were able to unlock the inherent strength and beauty of fork geometries, which are often overlooked in conventional construction.

The final assembly not only highlights the structural efficiency of tree forks but also showcases their aesthetic and ecological value, bridging the gap between nature’s complexity and digital precision. This process reinforces the potential of integrating natural materials with robotic fabrication as a sustainable design strategy for future architectural applications.
